German startup Paymill announced today that its online payments solution now accepts Carte Bleue, the European debit card payment system which dominates the French market. This comes just one month after they launched in France, and will definitely increase their attractiveness to French clients. Paymill, a Rocket Internet company similar to the American Stripe, has been rolling out quickly and aggressively across Europe (as Rocket Internet companies tend to do), and they have been targeting the developer communities through Startup Weekend sponsorship and other activities.
In France, there aren’t a lot of great options for accepting online payments as a business. Paypal, of course, is the dominant incumbent player in the space, and, as of today, Leetchi doesn’t allow non P2P payments, and so Paymill’s entrance into France presents quite an opportunity.
I had a chance to meet up with the French country manager Corentin Guillemard, who formerly worked at eBay, when they launched last month. After raising 10 Million euros in January, the company expanded rapidly and is now available in 34 countries, and, while it’s still early days for Corentin and his team, they are confident that Paymill will help French companies manage payments on their sites much more easily.
